Dr Derek Chong Visits School
Wednesday, December 06, 2017
Last week we were privileged to have Dr Derek Chong visit the School. Derek had just spoken at the International Men's Day breakfast hosted by the school's psychologist, Mark Cary, and was interested in seeing the campus.
Derek is Queensland's first indigenous psychiatrist. He has worked at the coalface in health, starting as a residential care worker, then a psychiatric nurse, then studying and practicing medicine before becoming a psychiatrist.
His indigenous and medical background gave Derek a insightful take on many of our unique practices such as quiet time, listening and breathing and intrinsic motivation. We hope to have him back at the school sometime to talk to students and parents.
