For Reflection - Children's Sense of Independence

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

“As children grow, and especially as they enter the teenage years, they need to develop a sense of independence, of being recognized beyond the family. Young people need to feel they have a place in the world that is uniquely their own, not their family’s, not their parents’. Parents can either recognise this need and support it, or they can have other reactions like misunderstanding or resentment which can stifle a child’s independence and consequently their self-esteem.”
